Infringement Scam
Posted by fight back (371 days ago)
I work in the IT dept for my company and in the past 12 months, we had received on-going # of phone calls claiming they are from the China Government telling us our company's china .cn domain name has been registered by someone else, and they have the authority to re-gain it back for us for a normal registration fee. On several incidences, I checked to see if that was true, and found out it is all a scam, somehow, after a month or so, the registry becomes available after receiving such call... My enquiry is that is there a law in HK against what they are doing, and the dept I should report this to. With actual, these calls were made by a HK Company.

We had the same scammers contact us... if you have time you can get in touch with the ICAC if they are a HK based outfit.

I think, in first instance, you should report it to the police, not the ICAC.

yup had that. I believe they are mainland outfit, with local office in hk "encouraging" you to register with them for a 10 year registration package.
I actually checked and my .cn and .com.cn domains hadn't actually been registered, anywhere, so totally bs.
However, to be on the safe side I asked my local web hosting guys (because you need to read and write Chinese) to register it for me.

Just beware, the company they claimed to had infringed your rights actually belongs to the same company they operates from, just with a difference name. I believed they are a sole agent for registry in HK, and the fees they charged are a lot higher. I suggest one should approve mainland registry directly if need to register .cn, the cost is almost half price. I believed it is $400/year in china, register with US domain name provider is about $38 USD/yr. The sole agent in HK charges $800 HKD a year. They claimed the difference is service, a bunch of BS, what service?????? Police claimed it is illegal, well, then ICAC should investigate...
