Hey, I would be very happy if anyone could give me info. about my shoulders/rotator cuff. I was doing the behind the neck press last year and after 4 weeks of agony I stopped, but what I realized later was that every time I benched more than 70 pounds my shoulders would start to hurt and I actually used to be able to do 110 pounds. Does anyone know any good ortopaadeic surgeon(sorry for the spelling). I would also be very happy if anyone could share their experience. Thanks a lot
Hi, I had the same problem with same exercise. I went to "sports physicians" in HK Island. www.sportsmed.hk
I cannot say whether they are good or not, but they are quite expensive. They did MRI on my shoulder and it was found that I have a partial rotator cuff torn.
As you know, if a tendon is torn, then it is and will stay so. It won't recover by itself but the pain will decrease with time. The only way to repair the tendon is operation which is not easy. It depends on your symptoms. If you can still live with that, if your pain is not dramatic, then just wait for a while. The pain reduces very slowly. It's already 6 months after my injury, I still have little pain but it decreases.
If your torn is too much, you can go for OP. But after OP you can forget about doing sports for 3-6 months.
Rotator cuff is an annoying thing. I learned my lessons and will be much more conservative during training. But what is torn, is torn, unfortunately.
I wish you good luck. Since I don't check here so often, you can write to bagci@myway.com
Have you had any investigations done on your shoulder to confirm the diagnosis?
It could be coming from a muscle imbalance, meaning you may be stronger in your major muscle groups, however not as strong in your scapular stability.
I wouldn't go diving straight in for surgery. Maybe try a conservative approach first off. Like going to see a qualified physiotherapist who specialises in sports injuries?
Check out Ken Lee Physiotherapy Centre. They have offices in Mong Kok (3428-8038) and Central (3426-8233) and ask to see Alex. Alex has been helping me with my torn meniscus in my knee and they have doctors they can refer you to who specialize in sports medicine. Will help you evaluate the problem to make sure of a correct diagnosis and help you explore your options for treatment without just assuming you need surgery. And they speak English and Cantonese.
hmm press behind neck! I thought that exercise was outlawed years ago! Tight muscles in the shoulder causing poor flexility so you stretched back anyway and then added 110lbs? I guess you also felt pain in the front of your shoulder when doing flat bench right? Lucy is correct with the muscle imbalance theory and you need expert advice from a sports physio. The treatment will be very painfull but you might be able to avoid surgery yet! always warm up the shoulders thoroughly before any upper body free weights exercise and remember that the small muscles are working just as hard with your shoulder stability while the larger ones are actively moving the weight
