Health care advice in HK
Posted by ems2000 (71 days ago)
My husband and I would like to get private health insurance and was wondering if anyone has any advice on the best value companies, whether it is worth getting etc?
I know health care is generally very good in HK, how about for chronic illness such as cancer?
Unfortunately neither of our companies offer insurance so we would like to look into cover for Dr, specialists, chronic illness etc
Appreciate any advice! THanks!

As I said in the other post, HSBC has many kinds of insurance to offer like accident insurance, medical insurance , multi travel insurance for reasonable amount. I have accident insurance and medical insurance.
But I have a maintenance of medicine for high blood pressure and I always visit the public hospital every 2 months. I have HK I.D., pay HK$45.00 have free consultation and medicine for 2 months.
I seldom see europeans go to the public hospital but if they have HK I.D., they will save a lot of money because I know in Hk, if you go to the private doctor, it is very expensive.
My husband went to the european doctor for colonoscopy and paid about HK$20,000.00 excluding consultation and that was 5 years ago. After 2 years, he went to the public hospital for another colonoscopy and paid only 100.00/visit.

Hi ems2000,
I know of a few companies that offer good medical insurance, including cover for chronic conditions. It can be expensive but you may not need to take the plan with the highest benefits. There are other options to reduce the premiums.

Where is the public hospital, and do you need an appointment before going?

I would also be keen to find out the public hospital, thank you! A friend of mine told me of a great one in Central (nr holywood rd) that has normal Dr surgery also for free/v cheap. Anyone know this one?
What is the cancer care like in HK? Is public hospital just as good as private?

Hi ems2000,
Prudential has recently launched a new plan called Crisis Cover smartchoice. This is basically a stand alone plan that can be attached to your existing medical insurance to provide you with additional coverage should something like a critical disease occur. This plan covers in total 42 diseases (cancer, heart attacks, stroke). I believe that this is what your looking for. May be you could contact me to discuss the details. My contact number is 2313 3601.
