Eye doctor

Hi,

I was diagnosed with Eye degeneration, thinning of retina something, not urgent, but i need to have a laser treatment in my right eye, as there is a 60% tendency of retina detachment later. I want to have a second opinion before i go for it, can anyone recommend a good doctor on this, reasonable fee.

My doc is Alexis at Melbourne Plaza, i don't know if he's famous or good, but his clinic is full, he does laser in his clinic for 6k, he said if i do it at adventist, it's also ok, but the fee is 10k.

Please help as i'm new here in HK, thanks a lot.

Get a second opinion in the public system.....many local private ophthalmologists over-recommend laser surgery for retinal thinning. I would try to see a retina specialist at the Hong Kong Eye Hospital and find out if you really need it; you might need a GP to refer you.

I was diagnosed with exactly the same thing by the same doctor. It took me by surprise since I went to him for a completely different matter. Did you finally took the laser treatment? Did you get a second opinion from HK Eye Hospital?

sorry for late reply, just saw your post.....

Nope, i did not go thru laser treatment and did not go back to that doctor. I went for second opinion at hk eye hospital, (i don't know if that's the right name), it's in Kowloon, take a bus from prince edward. Anyways, i was recommeded to this doctor who is very very good, it turns out it's normal to have that degeneration if you are near sighted, i have a regular check up every 6 months to know if it's getting worst, but nothing, so it's just "normal" for my case. I now have a yearly check up. I can go for laser, to make sure that it wont be detached later, but if you don't need it, why do it. It's like appendicitis, it's there, but if nothing is wrong, why you want to have it removed.

If you need the name of my doctor, pls pm me and i'll try to let you know. He is the professor there or one of the head doctors.

Remember that many hospitals will encourage people to have surgery, and sometimes it is not important to have it.

They need the income.

Tulipe, Call hk eye hospital and ask for Professor Tham, private department, not the public one. Though it also has a long waitlist.

hi boss,
i went for a checkup today, but was told i had a thinning in my retina also. he recommended laser as well - took me by surprised. my doc in central at new world bld. is it really common to recommend laser surgery? i am lost here..

Hi Winter2, i suggest you go for second opinion just like what i did. Don't worry, it's not that serious, UNLESS, you see a big black thing that blocks your view, then it's urgent to have it lasered.

Hey guys,

I'm based in Shanghai and was just diagnosed with retinal degeneration also, in my left eye. I have been aware of floaters in my left eye for about 6 years and had been to specialists in Austalia before but was told I am ok. The Chinese doctor immediately prescribed me laser surgery to prevent further damage. I am really skeptical about this as after doing research, I found it's common to over prescribe laser eye treatment as they need the money. Also, I found that it's quite common to have this disorder when you have myopia like I do. Your advice has helped a lot. Does anyone have floaters as well as being diagnosed with retinal thinning?

hi gtravis, i have floaters for a long long time, almost 10 yrs, i think. i was also told by docs (not HK doctors) it was common to have floaters, as long as they have not increased. So i didn't even think it was a problem until i went in for my first regular eye check in hong kong. he said i have retinal thinning, and laser is the only cure!
