Posted by flowers-daffodil (176 days ago)
my 16month old will drink cow's milk from her bottle but you give it to her in a cup then she refuses (she refuses formula from a cup too). but when she drinks cow's milk from a cup she wrenches. why is that? she'll drink water from a cup and straw no problem. the milk wasnt bad because i had it.
can anyone give me advice because i would really like to wean her off the bottle. thanks.

You just need to do it cold turkey.
Your daughter knows how to drink from a cup and straw, she just refuses to when it is milk.
So you pick a day, and throw away the bottles, and only offer her the milk in a cup with a straw (make it a different cup from the water cup). Have it at meals and at hand during the day - don't force it on her.
You might have 2-5 days of a thirsty daughter, but then she will surprise you and just drink.
For us on day 3 or so, our son just walked over the the cup and picked it up and drank! We were totally shocked and thrilled at the same time. He was 1 year and a week or two old.
Our Dr said that 'when he is thirsty enough, he will drink' and he was right, so don't worry about starving your daugther, etc...
We did this at 12 months, and 3 friends then followed suit... there are a few hard days, but after that all is forgotten and the cup and straw rule.
The younger the better - do it at 16 months rather than 3 years when they can discuss it with you hahaha.

Quite. As the wise Dr. Spock says: "Babies know a lot about nutrition." Holds true for toddlers. ;)

Milk has a distinctive flavour. Until today I don't really like to drink it plain and I understand your daughter's wrenches. If I may suggest another way-- buy with her a nice cup she would like and offer her the milk as coco rather than plain. She will get over it, we all hated certain foods as kids and later on grew to love them.
When you drink from a cup, you fill your mouth with the lequid therefore have more taste buds and other feeling in your mouth- all of which you avoid when drinking with a straw.
Try drinking your favourite c*cktail without a straw and see for yourself. Also with a straw it gets faster to the head ;-P
Good luck and don't forget she is only 16 months old.

I must say most HK milk doesn't taste very good. "Pura" has an ok taste. But it's not in my global top 5. ;)

Have you ever read the 'content's" part on chocolate milk here? hehehehehehe It says "water, milk powder...." :-s

Yeah. Same with skim milk, which is not actually skim milk but "milk drink". IIRC it says "water, milk" or something like that.
The 3-4 "skim milks" I have tried in HK taste pretty nasty.

Lucky you! You actually tasted something. Those skimmed ons are actually water with calcium, so I heard. It's not for nothing that they put them in "green" coloured boxes(why isn't there a "vomit" icon here?) ;-)
