mayonnaise

hi all
i havent given my 19month old daugther mayonnaise yet as i'm worried about the ëgg"in the mayo. somehow i have a feeling that the egg in mayo is not '"cooked" (strange feeling you may ask!) But if its ok to give her mayo then i can give potato salad, tuna mayo and egg mayo which would be great!!!
any advice is much appreciated.

Hi I've heard that the 'egg' in the mayo is not cooked thats why none of my kids have had it yet (not that they want it!). Unless you know that the egg is pasteurised than maybe you should wait. Its the same when you're pregnant that you shouldn't eat food that requires egg isn't cooked ie chessecakes.

Indeed, pasteurization is key. Many countries, including the USA, don't mandate egg pasteurization. So fresh mayo is out.
As for mayo in a jar, I am not so sure. My guess is that it would be pasteurized or it wouldn't keep. It should say on the jar.

You know, you can make up to 20 liters of mayonaise with only one egg. Industrial mayonaise is made like this, so the quantity of egg is minimum.
For the home made mayonaise, the quantity of egg is not important also.
If you are still worried, you can use this receipe:
2 tablespoons of mustard + 1 tablespoon of milk. Mix it by hand.
Add oil slowly, and mix by hand. It becomes like mayonaise.
Add some vinegar.
AND THERE IS NO EGG.
Anyway, here are the rules for babies and eggs:
6-9 months: only the yellow part, cooked, half of it
9-11 months: complete yellow part cooked or 1/2 cooked egg (white+yellow)
18 month: 1 complete egg cooked
24 month: 1 complete egg half cooked: still liquid.
Concering, the eggs for pregnant woman, there is no porblem ot eat them if you have no health problems (albumine). But of course, you shouldn't eat eggs for all meal.
You must eat healthy food, vegetables, meat, figh, butter, eggs, dessert, cheese and yogourt. A mix food is better for you and your baby.

Home made mayo uses raw egg, I don't think jars of mayo does.

pretty sure the jar may is pastursied million times over - certian it is safe. not fresh of course.

thanks everyone for your advice so i should chk the jar to see if the mayo has been pasteurised before giving it to my dauguter.

you can buy egg free mayonaise called nayonaise and another brand.
Try health gate or city super.
you can google egg free mayonaise for the brand names and some home made recipes without egg.
In addition, for the dishes you mentioned above, you could opt for yogurt instead of mayonaise - it has a nice fresh taste and is healthier too!
Also, I disagree with the egg suggestions above.
Most modern pediatric associations now say:
Egg yolk 8 months
Egg white 1 year
Always fully cooked.
When you are just serving the yolk, hard boil the egg first, then gently scoop the yolk out with a spoon, being sure that no white is in mixed in.
If there is a history of egg allergies in the family, then no egg until 2 years according to the Mayo Clinic.
Saying all that, if anyone eats mayonaise, be sure you follow the basic rules about not letting it sit on the counter or outside too long, etc...

Hellmann's mayo says its made with pasteurised egg. so confident there to give it to my daugther. thanks all for your comments.
