baby is about to start crawling - we have a dog and tend to leave the balcony doors open for her. Any ideas of how to block off the balcony from the baby (normal gates prob are not wide enough) - ideally something that could be easily removed...
One or two extra rails on top of the existing railings/balustrade. Consider closing up gaps in the existing balustrade if they are too wide for a toddler to crawl through.
A friend improvised and used extendable white poles/rods that you can get cheaply at Japan Home Centre, Price Rite or any neighborhood shops. Usually used to hang clothes. He bought a few of those, set them up horizontally and blocked off the balcony. And when you want to close the door, you can just remove the poles/rods.
My son could scale out of a crib when he was about five months old, and quickly too. If you have a climber, I would keep the doors closed. We have two dogs and a cat and quite a low balcony. So, we bought bamboo fencing, the accordian type and then went to the hardward store and bought some metal screen mesh material and affixed it to the bamboo fence. The bamboo fence was affixed to the balcony wall itself, using the strongest plastic tie-lock thingies.
