To cut a long story short. My twin sister (non identical) has just been diagnosed with a very rare autoimmune disease. This is very stressful to me in its own right. I informed my gyno of this as I am 12 weeks pregnant and just wanted to know if this was of any relevance. He got me straight in for a series of tests just to check that I didn’t have anything like my sister as these things can be genetic. He has put me on a low dose aspirin everyday (150mg) just to be on the safe side until the results come back – which can be 2 to 3 weeks.
The autoimmune disease is called sneddon syndrome – it’s a bit like lupus and these patients would be put on aspirin and heparin during pregnancies to avoid blood clots and miscarriage.
Is this dosage ok to take daily? will it be of any harm to my baby. I have suffered previous early miscarriage and really don’t want to loose this baby as everything looks fine up to now on the scans. Please advice.
Leahred, taking low dose aspirin will not harm your baby and will help with the clotting. I suffered 2 miscarriages & my Dr prescribed aspirin for my next pregnancy. I took it till 36 weeks and I now have a happy, healthy 6 month old. Good luck.
is a dosage of 150mg a day ( I take 2 little tables once a day) considered low dose ? Also will it be ok if my tests come back and everything is clear ? i.e. will it make my normal blood too thin.
i'm very sorry to hear about your sister. it must be difficult to be excited about your pregnancy while at the same time worried about her and the effects her sickness may have on you and your baby.
i had two very difficult pregnancies and was on pain meds that were MUCH stronger than aspirin. so, don't worry about it too much. i have two beautiful children.
dr's have to weigh the possible risk to the baby vs. the harm to the mother if nothing is done. obviously, you're dr feels that it is less risky to give you aspirin than not to.
baby aspirin is standard protocol for women who have a tendency to miscarry. Some women are prescribed this if they have had two miscarriages consecutively and for the third try and pregnancy will take aspirin. i had a friend who, after only one miscarriage, was prescribed baby aspirin - had a beautiful girl. Don't worry - your doctor is not going to prescribe something that is going to hurt your baby without proper disclosure.
