Delivery at Adventist

I'm currently 7 weeks pregnant and when I had to book my hospital room my doctor told me she doesn't deliever at the Matilda anymore due to the terrible room booking situation.

I'm in a bit of a dilemma now as I always thought I would give birth in the Matilda. I read about all the wonderful experiences women had there and I really know nothing about the Adventist hospital (which my doctor strongly recommended to me instead of the Matilda and where I booked a room now).

Has anyone given birth in the Adventist? What are the private rooms like? What is the staff like? Do they speak English (I don't speak a word of Cantonese)? Are they supportive?

It's a scary thought that I'm only 7 weeks pregnant and already have to worry about my delivery in September.

We just left the adventist today. It's fine, very clean, most staff are fluent English with the exception of a couple of nurses. All very friendly. Private rooms are good, you can get singles or share with someone, or stay in the Pearl room which is bigger overall but has a smaller room with a small sitting area. If you're in the singles then you can also get an extra bed put in the room in case hubbie or mum want to stay the night.

I delivered my first baby at Adventist & have my second one there as well. I'm a bit annoyed by the deposit they are demanding, but overall I think it's probably the same as Matilda............bit cheaper. Everyone speaks English there & the nurses are very friendly ...... delivery was a good experience! Don't worry......! Who is your doctor?

Hi Star&Shine, I'm glad you had a good experience there as well. My doctor is Dr Choy in Central. I didn't have to pay any deposit yet but the room wasn't confirmed so far. Is it common to pay a deposit? My doctor said even a confirmation doesn't guarantee me a room if they're full.
I find all this very scary.

my doctor has his office in the Adventist hospital and delivers there only- not sure about other doctors' situation in terms of hospital beds.........they told me the same that they wouldn't guarantee a bed even with the deposit......my delivery is end of May so I'm already booking now......as I'll be having c-section it's more scheduled......if you plan on natural delivery they might say they cannot guarantee a room as they don't know which day you come in......

Not sure what the doctor mentioned about the booking system - we do not take a deposit on booking but are firm on the number we will give a confirmed booking to as it is better to know wether we can take you early to allow alternative arrangments to be made and avoid turning mothers in labour away. Those doctors who double book patients (meaning some ladies do not show up and block the space for someone else) are approached. It could also be that we no longer grant your doctor admission rights at the hospital.

Newtothis, I paid my deposit in mid November (for Adventist) -that's when they changed their policy that all the booking will not be confirmed unless deposit is paid. I paid HK$20K for the deposit, and you can't select your room type at the time of the deposit. I am due in a few weeks (natural birth hopefully) and will let you know the room situation. According to my doctor, the hospital normally allowed for a variance of two weeks before and two weeks after the EDD.

I also heard that Adventist has increased their ward space by using the surgery ward for maternity patients. The only thing is that the surgery ward is on a different level of the maternity ward so the baby is not in the same level as you.

Yes, we also paid the $20k deposit. We requested he private room, but this is not confirmed until you actually get there. Similarly, if your husband wants to stay with you and wants a patient style bed, rather than an old uncomfortable leg rest which opens out into a bed, then you can only request it when you are there. I got lucky... or maybe unlucky if I consider how much sleep I actually got!

When we arrived we then paid another $30k, which I believe was the $50k c-section 5 night package. Total cost came around 130k. It seems most people in the 5 night package actually get out after the 4th night - but you don't get any refund.

We were going for a natural, but then switched to a c-section one week before for various reasons. We then booked a "lucky day". Although they only take I think 4 c's a day - you can always pay extra for an emergencey c-section!!

I visited the Adventist to pay the HK$20 000 deposit and to have a look around the maternity ward.
I was very impressed. The staff was super friendly and the private room I saw looked great (I requested private but they can't guarantee it). I feel a lot better about this now and I'm glad I went with my doctors suggestion.
