A big NO if you want to do it the classic way. Cognac, decent red wine, good bacon, garlic, onions, button mushrooms, button onions, carrot, bay leaves & thyme (or a bouquet garni) and some flour.

I was thinking that too but seems like tomato paste makes the whole thing richer and tastes better

Non- definately a NO! Use loads and loads of onions. Stir fry till it turns caramelised onions. In addition to onions, put loads pearl onions as well. Onions are the key to the rich sweetness!
