video to dvd

Can anyone tell me the best way to do this?
I installed a video card in my pc and recorded a clip 2 minuets long from a video player, the file is size is 118mb. After a rough calculation, this would allow me to burn approx 75 minuets onto a 4.7gig dvd which I thought was a lot less than a blockbuster movie holds.
The file is in .mpg format, does that make a difference? Am I doing somthing wrong? or is there no other way?
