I want to unlock my Smartone phone - where is the best place and how much will it cost?

Go on the internet and see what is available. You may find that a simple piece of software and the right cable will "set you free!'

ldldjr is correct. I unlocked a Nokia for £5. Just entered the phone code and got an unlock code back.

Google "unlock Sharp" and your model number. Here's an example http://www.foneszone.co.uk/unlock/how_to_quicklist/Sharp.php.

Unfortunately it is a Hong Kong only edition SX833 and isn't on that website.

Googling "unlock SX833" yields this website: http://www.mobile2mobile.net/unlock/RemoteunlockingSharp.htm. You'll need the data cable.

BTW there is never a guarantee that it'll work but I wouldn't have a problem performing the procedure if it were my own phone.

What phone? Smartone is not a phone, but a network. I took it to Smartone and because it was over 2 years old - they were obliged to unlock it.

From what I read you were looking to unlock the Sharpe SX833 phone you purchased from Smartone.
Is this not the case? That is the phone I was asking about.
