IPOD Battery
Posted by JWM (571 days ago)
I have an Ipon, almost 3 years old now, bought it in the US and now I think the battery might be going, which I have expected. Does anybody know
1. Can I get a new Battery here in HK, if so where and how much.
2. IS it worth it, or should I just buy a new Ipod?
Thanks

I know about this personally! I have a Gen3 40GB iPod, 3 years old. About 3 months ago, the battery lasted about 2 hours per charge, and would shut off suddenly when the indicator still showed power left.
I bought a new battery at a battery place in Wan Chai next to Wanchai Computer Centre (forgot the name of the place, but it has an orange sign) for HK$180 and used the included tools to change the battery myself. I now get 10 hours per charge on my iPod, which is more than the original capacity when the iPod was brand new!
Well worth it.
Edit: I think the place might be called "The Battery Connection" and there are shops in other places in Hong Kong, including Sham Shui Po, Ap Liu Street.

Be careful about this though. If any problems occur, Apple will refuse to repair your IPOD for you.

If the Ipod is out of warranty, why would they refuse to repair it ? Even if it was under warranty, just put the original battery back in and how would they ever know ?
'
I did it for years replacing the CPU eprom chip with higher performance non-factory versions in cars I have owned, swapped the IC over everytime the car went in for service while under warranty.. When out of warranty, do what you want... Regardless of what the warranty stipulates, if you hand your product in for service with no visible sign of mods, what can they do about it ....ha ha.

You can pretty much tell if an iPod has been opened, no matter how careful you are with it...
They're really tough nuts to crack. But you really don't have to worry about ruining it, as long as you're careful not to tear any ribbon connectors.
But the point is that even under Apple's Applecare extended warranty program, this iPod would no longer be covered at all.
By the Way, Apple will replace the battery for you for a fee of about HK$400, if I recall correctly.

unfortunately ipods are infamous for having battery issues. just google ipod, battery and see for yourself. that being said, if you can replace it yourself w/o breaking it go for it. my nano will probably be the last ipod i own as there are many more reliable options on the market these days.

i have an ipod nano and the battery died on me.
took it to the authorized apple dearlership in guanzghou, service one getronics, and they promptly told me to buy a new ipod instead. can you believe the nerve of that guy?
i know there are lots of repair services at computer city near president hotel. does anyone know or any reputable repair services at this place, or any other places, that will service apple ipods at a reasonable fee with genuine apple replacement parts?
thanks.
