Neighbouring HK sights - Can't fly
Posted by sasnia (501 days ago)
We have 5 days off in April and would like to go on vacation somewhere near HK. The challenge is that I can't fly so it has to be some place close that we can get to by train or bus...or ship? Doesn't matter if it's big city or remote, just as long as there's plenty to see and do.
We're open to any suggestions! THANKS!!!

You don't mention what you'd like to do -- like hiking or bicycling, seeing sights, shopping? You also don't mention a budget. There's a lot you could just do in HK that you wouldn't necessarily have time to see or do in ordinary life. There are cruises you can take out of HK. You can also get to Hainan Island (there is a ferry that actually transports the train) and also many other destinations in China available by rail travel, including the Great Wall at Beijing and Terra Cotta Warriors at Xi'an, very do-able in five days through sleeper trains. A bit closer, it's just an overnight train ride to Guilin and from there a 2 hr bus ride to Yangshuo where probably the best thing to do is ride a bicycle through the countryside and /or take a few days trip to the rice terraces.

Thanks Meiguoren. I'm preggers, so nothing too active - no long hikes or riding bikes. Seeing sights would be best. A cruise sounds good too.

Sasnia, if you are pregnant and over 7th month (as you can't fly), I would recommand to avoid China: traveling in mainland is always quite tiring, in addition, you do not want to over exhaust yourself and end up in one of the local hospitals, right? train, sleepers or not, busses and local taxis, all same, will be very tiring for you.
Macau would be an easy option.

Oh, yes, at 7 months preg I suggest just find someplace warm and float in the water! :-) (For the life of me, I can't figure out why Chinese doctors tell preg women not to swim? In USA it's considered one of the healthiest forms of exercise for preg women because it doesn't stress the joints!) Or, can you save that vacation for after baby is born, so hubby can spend more time with you or to postpone when you have to go back to work? But remember, unless you are planning a c-sec, giving birth is one of the most strenuous things you can do, and also you will need to be in good physical shape after baby is born. You'll feel better with a bit of moderate exercise every day, both aerobic and strengthening. Just keep heart rate under 120 - 125 or so when you exercise.

Macau is close and nice getaway - book youself into the Westin and hang out at Hac Sai Beach.
Star Cruise runs out of HK - to Halong Bay is a nice trip. But Star Cruises can be quite stressful because your fellow passengers may not be the most polite of people.

Yangshuo is gorgeous. We stayed at the Magnolia hotel which was really nice - not 5 star but very lovely and the staff were great. Did a couple of boat trips with 2 small kids in tow. Awesome scenery. Well worth the overnight train trip it would take to get there. Magnolia hotel (and I'm sure many others) can arrange a pick up from Guilin which would make life easier.

Sasnia,
I agree with Lost in HK about Macau. Its easy to get to. Hotels, and more importantly, vacant rooms, are plentiful. Lots to see, but at the same time you can just pamper yourself in the in-hotel spa and catch up on your Zzzz's
But I disagree with Lost about the expected stress on thhe overnight Star Cruise or the 3D2N China Cruise. I am of the opinion that the cruise is an excellent way of getting away from the HK crowd. The price includes accomodations, 3 buffet meals (dinner, midnight snack, breakfast) for the overnight trip, and use of most facilities (pool, kids rec room, jacuzzi, movie theatre entrance, most stage/variety show entrance, etc)
Best regards
