Looking for a reasonably priced, clean hotel/guest house for a family of 4 (2 teens)in Chiang Mai, Thailand for August this year. Good food, spacious rooms, hospitality, safe and an advantage if it has spa/massage/health/relaxation related activities for adults,Recommendations, please.

do yourself a favour and go to chiang rai. much more beautiful and great for the kids. stay at the anantara which has it's own elephant orphanage. www.ananatara.com

Observatory, the hotel is truely beautiful but way out of our budget range. We travel well but prefer clean but local guest houses in the US30 - $55 range.

About 3 years ago i stayed at the Lai Thai Guesthouse. Good location, clean, friendly and cheap!

Can you also recommend some specific things to do and if possible day trips/agents you did them through. It is so easy to be ripped off today so personal recommendations are valued. (Elephant orphanage/rafting etc)Did anyone do the train trip to Chiang Mai and if so, which class did you take?

Since you are a party of 4, it may be better to explore the option in booking a private car for the day.
On different occasions/trips, I paid :-
1)600 Bhts for 3 hrs hotel limo with driver, touring the town itself. Driver can communicate in English.
2)2300 Bhts for a day(7am-8pm) for Toyoto aircon taxi to go to Chiangrai & the borders of Golden Triangle. You can book this when you arrive at the airport.
Taking the long tailed boat ride is extra.

You can use the hotel travel desk, as they are also linked to other travel agencies, price difference is not that much.
