Modern Cheungsam / Qipao

Does any one know a good tailor in HK who can make/design a modern looking cheungsam (eg. fusion between eastern and western style)? I've been to Shanghai Tang and they also recommended Benny Cheung - but they're both soooo expensive!!

Have you tried Linva Tailor in Central, I got mine from there. It's mid-price ranged I would say, but they have alot of fabrics and designs.

That's great thanks - do you mind my asking was your Chrungsam a modern or traditional cut? Also, do you know if they can design one for you, or do you have to come in with a picture of what you want?... Thanks!!

Mine is quite traditional (and quite tame in comparison to others they had there) in blue thai silk with gold edging.

They have either off the rack, which they can alter for you, or made to measure which is what I got - you get more choice this way, plus it fits like a glove and you can specify the exact bits (lining colour, length etc).

They can design one for you I think, but as is always the case with these things if you have any pictures, take them with you - it's even worth a google image search to see if there's anything you like (or a look on the Shanghai Tang website) just for ideas and details.

Hi Everyone, I thought I would give you an update on this. I went to Linva, and they were very nice, then I went to check out Golden Plaza which is right next to the Metropark Hotel by Prince Edward MTR, and I got a dress! They have heaps of wedding dresses, bridesmaids dresses and evening gowns - you basically pick a design you like (and you can try it on), then they will tailor make one for you, putting in any changes you requested. I picked a white lace cheongsam, then changed the color to red and changed it to a halterneck. It was heavy material with A-line shape, which is great if you're western. They all spoke decent English. I'm going for the first fitting at the end of August, so fingers crossed....but judging by what I saw, it all looked good. There's floors and floors of dress shops, it's quite overwhelming. I got mine on the 2nd floor - I have their namecard at home if anyone wants specifics.

Can i have the contact pls? i went there once and never had the guts to go in and ask. I was looking for a cocktail dress but it looks like it's all for bridesmaid and brides, but my friend says they have lots of formal dresses as well. Do you mind if i ask how much is the price that you tailored made? thanks.

Hi Crystal,

Most of their stuff is for bridesmaids and brides - but you could always find a design and ask them to make the same, but eg. shorter, or slightly different cut, or without all the beads and sequens they sew on. It is really dauting in there, especially if you don't speak much chinese, and everything looks really gawdy and sparkly - but if you take your time to look through the dresses, there are some gems. Definately if you want an unusual or east-meets-west looking cheung sam, you could find something there.

The shop I went to was called Sweet Wedding, Rm 130, 1st Floor Golden Plaza, 745-747 Nathan Road, and the lady's name was Angel Tong. My dress was HK$4000, but it has a lot of lace and embroidery. I'd say for a tailor made simple cocktail dress, you could probably get it for $2000 up. Make sure you negotiate too! The shop I went to has some evening dresses, and if you wanted to make them into a cocktail dress, you just have to tell them to alter the style a bit.

Alternatively, I bought a cocktail dress online from the states on www.nordstroms.com and my sister sent it out to me (they only deliver to the states). They have some AMAZING cocktail dresses, but it wasn't cheap (about HK$2500, bearing in mind it wasn't tailor made)... anyways, it got to HK, and I didn't like the material cause it was too static, and quite see-through, so I wondered into World Wide Plaza, up onto the 2nd floor above Delifrance, and went into one chinese tailor who wasn't very helpful, then to a nice philippino tailor, and I'm getting the dress copied, but with nicer material - and all in, for the dress and the material, it's costing HK$800! I think I'll just return the Nordstrom's dress and get my money back!

Sorry, Sweet Wedding has two shops, the first is Rm 130 1st floor (as mentioned above), but the one I went to was 2nd floor, Rm 232!

I'm curious about the Philippino tailor above the Delifrance in the World Wide House - do you happen to know what it's called? There are a few tailors there. I have a photo of a cocktail dress that I'd like to try to get made in the next few weeks - does he seem like he could work that quickly?

The shop is tiny, and it has the name "bridal" or "wedding" in it's title. If you start on the Delifrance floor, go up the escelators 1 flight, turn right, and then turn right again, just after the corner shop, is her shop, and you'll see lots of pictures of wedding gowns in the window - the place literally is tiny, but it is not hard to find.

She did my dress in 7 days, and it was fine, I didn't need another fitting, but I had mine copied from an already existing dress, so you'll probably need to go back for fittings. I can't vouch what she's like for copying from a picture...as mine was an exact copy...but she was really friendly, cheap, speaks English and did a good job on my dress - if in any doubt for copying a dress from a picture, it might be good to find a Chinese tailor?...
